Indian Engineering Services is one of the civil service exams that are conducted by the Union Public Service Commission of India. Through this exam, engineers are recruited to various departments of the Indian Government. If you crack this exam, you’ll be recruited as a Class-I Officer. This is a very prestigious post, hence a large number of candidates aspire for it. 


UPSC releases notification for IES Exam every year. Candidates should make sure that they fulfil the UPSC IES Eligibility Criteria before applying for the same else their candidature will get rejected for once and for all. 

UPSC IES Eligibility Criteria


UPSC IES Age Limitations


  • To be eligible for the IES Exam, the Minimum Age of the candidates should be 21 years and the Maximum Age is 30 years for General/UR Category candidates.

  • For candidates belonging to OBC Category, the Maximum Age is 33 years.

  • For candidates belonging to SC/ST Category, the Maximum Age is 35 years.

  • For candidates belonging to PwD Category, the Maximum Age is 40 years.

  • Maximum Age limit also varies for candidates belonging to Jammu Kashmir Residence, Ex-Servicemen, etc.


UPSC IES Educational Qualifications


Candidates must have the required Educational Qualifications to be eligible for the IES Exam.


  • Candidates must possess an engineering degree from a recognized university/institution of India OR an engineering degree or diploma course from foreign universities that are recognised by the Indian Govt.

  • Must have passed section A & B of Institution Exam conducted by IE(Institution of Engineers).


UPSC IES Nationality  


Candidates must be:


  • A citizen of India, or

  • A subject of Nepal, or

  • A subject of Bhutan, or

UPSC IES Exam Pattern


If you meet the eligibility criteria then you should get started with your preparations for the IES Exam. We'll be discussing the UPSC IES Exam Pattern so that you can devise a strategy for your preparation. UPSC will be recruiting for four branches that are Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Tele-communication Engineering and Electrical Engineering. 


The selection process involves three stages that are:


  • Stage-I: Preliminary Exam

  • Stage-II: Mains Exam

  • Stage-III: Personality Test


Stage-I(Preliminary Exam)


The Preliminary Exam includes two papers that are General Studies & Engineering Aptitude and the second paper will be based on the discipline of the candidates. The papers will contain MCQs i.e. they will be objective in nature. Every question will be of 2 marks and for every wrong answer, there will be a deduction of ⅓ marks.


  • General Studies & Engineering Aptitude: There will be 100 questions. The maximum marks for the paper are 200. The duration of the paper-I will remain 2 hours.


  • Discipline/Stream(Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics & Tele-communication Engineering and Electrical Engineering) Based Exam: The paper will include 150 questions of 300 marks. The duration of this paper is going to be 3 hours. 



Stage-II(Mains Exam)


The UPSC IES Mains Exam is going to be a descriptive exam. It involves two papers of 300 marks each. Both these papers will be according to the respective engineering discipline of the candidates. 


  • Paper-I: It will be 300 marks and the duration of the exam will be 3 hours.

  • Paper-II: This paper will also be of 300 marks and the exam duration will also be 3 hours.


Stage-III(Personality Test)


The candidates who will secure the cut-off marks will be called for the Personality Test. Various qualities like Leadership, Social Skills, Intellectual, Initiative, Integrity of character, etc. of the candidates will be assessed in the Personality Test. This test will be of 200 marks.
